Nothing wrong with complimenting a girl who made delicious cookies by telling her 'she'll be a great wife someday', according to Faith Goldy.:

The link above will take you to a recent SUN news segment in which Michael Coren and frequent SUN news contributor Faith Goldy discuss the recent controversy over a remark made by Tory Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield to a young girl in New Brunswick. The girl had made cookies, and upon sampling them, Ashfield complimented her by saying ‘she’d make someone a good wife someday’. Now, faith Goldy doesn’t seem to have an issue with this, but I want to highlight here what’s problemtic about statements like this.

First of all, pretending like there’s no difference between saying someone ‘will make a good cook someday’ and that they’ll ‘make a good wife someday’ completely ignores the fact that ‘wife’ has traditionally been a subservient role in which the woman is expected to do the majority of cooking, cleaning and childrearing in the household. This holds up in a global context where tribes in Africa designate ‘female husbands’ and ‘male wives’ to men and women who go against the grain of these normative gender roles.

Whether or not this was the most sexist comment in the world matters very little here. What does matter is the apparent ease we still have with complimenting women only by telling them they’ll be worth something to a man one day. Ashfield could have just as easily said ‘you’ll grow up to be a great cook one day’, but chose not to, because it is this kind of casual sexism that is still a huge part of ou daily interactions and never gets called out because ‘he meant it as a compliment’.

We often talk about sexism of this nature happening in other ‘less developed’ parts of the world, as if we’ve grown out of it ourselves. But that view totally ignores the sexism that continues to happen in North America and continues to shape the lives of girls and women right here. We only need to look closely at the real life pressure that women face every single day to be the caretakers, cleaners and childrearers in their marriages. All over the world being a ‘good wife’ means doing *substantially* more work (without recognition) than what it takes to be considered a ‘good husband’. Working women continue to struggle with ‘balancing work and life’, which is something most men do not seem to have a problem with. Also, I think it’s important to remember that Ashfield’s comments don’t exist in a vacum. It’s only in the last 30 years or so that women have truly begun to be recognized as PEOPLE instead of as wives, sisters, or daughters. Continuing to compliment women and girls in ways that don’t take into account their worth and merit as INDIVIDUALS, but instead only in ways that position them as worthy for a man, is problematic. I think my main point here is that ‘wife’ is not a neutral term, nor is it a politically neutral position. Historically to be a wife has meant something very different than a husband: the two have existed in a power hierarchy that exists to this day in the ways that women are still responsible for most tasks within the home. I want to encourage us to see women as their own persons: not just as good for a guy someday. We would never think of complimenting a boy that way, and it’s important to tease out why that difference exists, and what it would mean if we did speak to boys in that

Just as an aside, one of the other ways that I always see women being talked about in relation to men as opposed to just on their own is when it comes to rape. We often hear rhetoric along the lines of ‘how would you feel if it was your sister, your daughter, your wife, your friend’, putting a woman’s rights to her own body squarely in relation to how much she is valued by the men in her life. Why should this be the case? Why should it matter if a woman who has been raped is your sister, daughter, or wife? if she is none of these things, can’t we all come together and say that she still deserves autonomy over how her body is used? can’t we see that women deserve not to be raped not because they’re someone’s sister or daughter or wife but because she is a HUMAN BEING?

I would also argue that the over abundance of advertising that posits women as sex objects for male consumption (often without their heads being shown, so literally as just these sexualized floating body parts to be looked at by a male gaze) also contributes to the idea that women ought still exist solely for a man’s pleasure. We see it in companies like Victorias Secret who will crate a pair of panties for a young girl that read ‘sure thing’, but not ‘consent is sexy’. We see it in the overwhelming amount of responses to rape cases that believe if a woman was interested in the man at one point, she had an ‘obligation’ to sleep with him. Or by wearing certain clothing, she is responsible for the feelings of arousal that might result, and is also responsible for sating those feelings. This feeling that a woman’s body and skills are only valuable if she’s using them for a man is one that is totally widespread, not only in parts of the world where women can’t drive or go to school.

I want to make clear that I am not insinuating AT ALL that I think becoming a stay at home mother (or a stay at home wife without children, for that matter) is a bad choice for women. Again, I think the leap Goldy is making saying all women on the left who are offended by this comment are also neo-liberals who believe a woman is only truly living up to her potential once she reaches the top of a corporate ladder is really false. There definitely is amazing value in being a wife and mother. But what this comment is saying is that her skills ONLY have value BY being a wife and mother. That’s sort of a small distinction, but I think a really important one.

LASTLY, her insinuation that theres something hypocritical about women supporting gay marriage but not wanting to get married themselves is RIDICULOUS.

First, I would like to welcome you to this wonderful tumblr community. Most of us just sign up for free, but I guess paying a billion dollars works too.

A lot of us are apprehensive about your presence in our space. I’m afraid we don’t like change very much. Whenever something big happens, we curse the gods and make graphics and gifs displaying our dislike of said change.

This will pass in a few weeks once we start arguing over a Sherlock/Supernatural slashfic.

We are aware of some mistakes you’ve made in the past. You changed the spirit of flickr to the dislike of many. You bought geocities and shut it down. Because of that, I don’t have access to my supercool Golden Girls fanfiction site. There was one story in which they were all lesbians and they ended up having simultaneous intercourse with an octopus which was easily facilitated due to it having eight tentacles. This tome of inter-species romance was surrounded by some amazing unicorn glitter gifs and a midi file playing Barry Whites’ Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe.

But that’s gone now.

And for a long time I blamed you.

I don’t think you are a sign of bad tidings though. You have your strengths. My dad is very fond of your search engine. He is always successful at finding recipes on how to grill various meats. I think he researched a riding lawn mower using your well indexed results. Sometimes you put videos of dogs doing funny things on your front page and it makes him giggle. If you can do all that for my beloved father, then maybe you can be a positive force in this tumblr community that I love.

A few tips:

Enjoy Doctor Who, but avoid talking about the whole Moffat thing. You’ll just get into fights and become sad.

Everything is better with a cat gif. Be sure to save a bunch to a reaction folder on your hard drive. Since you have a a decent amount of funds, you might even consider opening a cat gif division of Yahoo. Buy sixty cats, put them in a room with a bunch of boxes, film them, make gifs… profit.

Tag your spoilers. Seriously.

When you put images in a text post, make sure not to do the ones that end up looking like polaroids.

And my final tip. Remember that first and foremost, tumblr is a community. Respect that community and you will do fine.
